June 23, 5: David Johnson, Alforex Seeds assistant director of research and dormant alfalfa plant breeder, talking about breeding the HiGest low lignin alfalfa at the West Salem, Wis. Low-lignin alfalfa varieties are now a reality for dairy and cattle producers. Alforex Seeds recently released the low lignin varieties HiGest and HiGestavailable on a limited basis for the planting alforex with patents pending. Don Miller, director of product development at Alforex Seeds, said the low lignin varieties were alforex and are the first commercially available low lignin varieties on the market. Lignin is an organic compound that binds cellulose fibers, thus hardening and strengthening cell walls, according to Alforex Seeds. Lignin production accelerates as plants mature, giving structural support to the plant. Alforex the process that allows the plant to stand also reduces digestibility of the plant in the rumen, Miller said. The cows are able to eat more feed because of that and, as a result, have greater gains in milk or beef," he explained. HiGest has a fall dormancy FD rating of 3. FD is defined as the reduction in above-ground growth in the fall as a result of decreasing temperatures and day length. Lower FD ratings correlate to an alfalfa variety being a more dormant variety, with good winter hardiness. HiGest has a FD rating of 6, which correlates to moderate dormancy and some fall and winter growth, according to Alforex Seeds. One of the big advantages with these new HiGest low lignin alfalfa varieties is the increased harvest flexibility, Miller noted. In looking at alfalfa plant growth, forage quality and high forage yield are somewhat at odds with each other. Forage yield increases as the plant growth gets closer to full maturity percent bloombut as the plant matures, forage quality decreases. In the past growers have compromised "to obtain a happy medium for both, and sacrificed some forage yield to get alfalfa hay that is acceptable in forage quality," Miller said. This was accomplished by harvesting their alfalfa up to seven days early 10 percent bloom. A producer can stay with his normal cutting interval, about 28 days for a 10 percent bloom, and obtain alforex higher forage quality because of less lignin in the alfalfa plant compared to conventional alfalfa varieties. The producer's second option would be to extend his harvest date from 28 days to 35 days to get more yield, but he would still have forage quality comparable to what he has with a conventional alfalfa variety cut at 28 days, he added. The HiGest low lignin varieties were developed by plant breeders Dr. David Johnson and Dr. Jon Reich at Alforex Seeds who started working on developing low lignin alfalfa about eight years ago. Miller explained the breeders surveyed the company's large collection of alfalfa germplasm and alforex there was adequate genetic variability for lignin content to make significant improvements. Because these varieties were developed through conventional plant breeding processes, the HiGest varieties require no additional tech fee added to the cost of the seed, making them alforex affordable than transgenic seed, Miller said. Alforex Seeds is offering a limited number of HiGest dormancies in select regions during its introductory season. The company will offer additional dormancies in future years.
