Putting cat up for adoption hotline
Is it better to euthanize my cat or put him up for adoption? I feel awful about having to make this choice, but I won't be able to keep my cat much adoption. I will have to move some time in the next 6 months and I cannot bring him with me complicated personal and financial issues. I would opt to give him up for hotline except that he requires medication everyday and I'm worried that no one will adopt him and he will just be miserable. If I go away for a few days, even though someone is at home to care for him he gets stressed out and over-grooms himself to the point that he bleeds. If he would just be miserable in a shelter for years or the rest of his life if it's a no-kill shelter or miserable until they put him down any putting shelter then I feel like it would be more humane just cat have him put down. Would he get over me and not be miserable and self-destructive? Would someone adopt him even though he needs daily medication to live? I want to minimize his suffering and I don't know what to do. Please keep in mind that "No Kill" does not mean a great shelter. Sometimes it actually is in an animal's best interest to be humanely euthanized. You do want to find a shelter that does not euthanize for space and time, which means as long as your animal is not overly aggressive and has a manageable medical condition ie, is not terribly suffering or dyinghe will have a space. Sometimes "No Kill" shelters turn into hoarding situations because they will not euthanize under any circumstances and end up taking in way more animals than they have the reasonable capacity to provide quality care for. Cats don't like change, sure, but he will get over you and bond to someone else. Phenobarb is easily administered and pretty cheap, and this is considered a mangageable medical condition by most good shelters. There are some shelters that are nicer than others, and there are quite a few where I don't think he would be "miserable until they put him down. A lot of shelters also place kitties like this into foster homes, which is a second-best alternative to immediate adoption in your case. You really should not consider euthanasia until you have exhausted all other options. Options include talking to family and friends hotline rehoming him, talking to every shelter within for traveling distance of you, talking to every rescue group you can, contacting your veterinarian for potential options available through them, and covering Twitter and Facebook in adorable pictures of this cat. The shelter where I work has actually seen a decrease in surrenders of cats in recent years due to owners having so much success finding new homes for kitties via social networking on their own.
