We are headed to Nova Scotia in June and wondering if places accept American money or if we needed to exchange for Canadian before we leave? Many businesses will accept American currency as a courtesy to American tourists. Businesses that choose to accept US dollars set their own exchange rate, so you may exchange the rate different from store to store, and the rate will NOT be in your favour. You will receive your change in Canadian funds. Coins, as a general rule, are accepted at face value…at par. Most places will take credit cards, however there may be fees over and above the exchange rate charged by the credit card issuer. Some credit cards have a Foreign Usage Fee tacked on for usage outside of forex issuing country. Check with your card issuer for exact details. You could always use your bank card to withdraw money from an ATM. There is a government sponsored program in Nova Scotia probably in all provinces called "Fair Exchange", which some businesses participate in voluntarily. The ones that do so will have exchange sticker or card someplace in thier business office, or on thier website indicating such. Participants do agree to give the fair exchange rate. Being in the tourist business I check what the rate is in the forex and that is the rate recieved for that day When you book your accommodation or tours just ask if they honour the fair exchange program. At the Halifax Airport there is a currency exchanger. You won't get 'the best' rate, but it's fair and it's easy. The counter is right down next to the food court. We will definately exchange money as we want to please the locals!!! Now that the tables have turned and US currency is valued less exchange Canadian a lot of small business may NOT accept US currency. Similar to the States Highly recommend you converting your dollars at your home bank. If a long forex customer, they may give you an even better rate.
